Celebrities Caught Driving Under the InfluenceSwango Law P.C
It seems like celebrities getting caught driving under the influence have become a common occurrence these days. Whether we read it on the newspaper or see it on television, it’s no surprise to see another Hollywood celeb caught drunk driving.
While we expect these stars to face charges just like the rest of the people who arrested for DUI, their cases rarely result in jail time, or if they do, only for a very short stint. Could this be one of the perks of being on the A-list? Nevertheless, their mug shots plastered all over the news remind us why we shouldn’t have that extra shot before getting behind the wheel.
Here are some celebs notorious for their DUIs:
The former Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes was photographed using her iPhone while driving her BMW along the curbside of a red zone in Los Angeles. According to the photographer of People Magazine, the actress wasn’t even looking at the road and went right through a stop sign.
After allegedly hitting a Los Angeles County Sheriff deputy’s marked car, the “Easy A” actress was then arrested for driving under the influence. Although nobody got injured from the collision, both vehicles sustained minor paint damage. The actress’s father stood by his daughter stated that Bynes was not intoxicated at the time of her arrest.
Who could ever forget the famous arrest of a rich blonde heiress? Paris Hilton joined the list of stars who got arrested for DUI and had to face jail following the indictment. After being sentenced in 2007, Hilton had to serve 45 days in prison. Instead of completing her prison term, she was eventually released after 23 days in jail.
Hilton’s early release became very controversial that year. However, her jail time was technically voided after she violated her terms of probation from her DUI sentence. After driving on a suspended license when she wasn’t supposed to get behind the wheel, it looks like she didn’t serve any time for her DUI conviction.
Lindsey Lohan is another star who joined the long list of Hollywood celebrities who ran into some legal issues a few years back. After being arrested twice for allegedly driving under the influence in 2007, Lohan was able to spend 84 minutes in jail and was later released on bail. Being put on probation along with several visits to rehabilitation facilities caused the recording star and actress to lose some movie deals.
Hollywood actress Michelle Rodriguez was also one of those top celebs who got nabbed for allegedly driving under the influence. Who would have thought that the “Fast and Furious” star could be so reckless on the road?
In 2006, Rodriguez was ordered by the court to serve 60 days in prison for violating her probation. The sentence came 6 months after she pleaded guilty to multiple charges including operating a vehicle with a suspended license, DUI and hit and run.
In addition to the prison term, the Hollywood actress was also ordered to complete a 30-day alcohol rehabilitation program as well as carry out community service work for 30 days. Due to the prior violation, Rodriguez’s probation was extended until June 2009.
Award-winning actor and Hollywood director, Mel Gibson, was arrested in 2006 for allegedly driving under the influence. Gibson got pulled over by the police after he was caught speeding at 87mph in a 35 mph zone. The actor was arrested after he failed several breath tests. He was later released on a $5,000 bail.
After Gibson’s arrest, he was sentenced to an alcohol abuse program for three months. Apart from paying hefty fines and a restitution of $1,300, he also attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for one year. Gibson’s driving license was also suspended for 90 days.
In 2003, country singer Wynona Judd was arrested for driving under the influence. She was stopped by a police officer after she was caught speeding at 47mph in a 30 mph zone. A breathalyzer test was administered and Judd was found to have a BAC level of 0.175 percent – more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
After she was taken into custody, Judd was later released on a $500 bail. The country singer was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days in jail. However, the prison term was suspended and she was told to complete an equal amount of probation instead.
Relative to her DUI arrest, Judd also got her license suspended for one year. She was also ordered by the court of law to carry out 200 hours of community service and pay in court fees a total of $1,000.
In 2007, the star of the reality television series Keeping Up with the Kardashians was arrested for DUI. Khloe Kardashian was then sentenced to 30 days in prison but had actually served only 173 minutes. Just like Paris Hilton, the sentence came after she violated a prior probation of a DUI conviction. Consequently, Kardashian had to attend alcohol education courses.
